Message from Jeff Mayes, Club President
In my role as Club President, I was recently comforted to learn that Tennis Australia (the governing body of tennis clubs in Australia) has a zero tolerance approach to child abuse, as I am sure all club members will also be comforted.
Tennis Australia released a Member Protection Policy in 2016 with the purpose of protecting the health, safety and well-being of all tennis players. Protecting children is a key topic of this policy.
They have taken a further step in protecting children by releasing guidelines on safeguarding children in 2017 and have issued a checklist to help clubs meet their obligation in providing a child safe environment.
One of the first steps clubs need to take in providing a child safe environment is to appoint two or more Member Protection Information Officers (MPIO).
The role of an MPIO is to be the first point of contact for any enquiries, concerns, or complaints about inappropriate behaviour.
Your club is looking for members who are involved with the junior tennis competitions to nominate to be an MPIO.
The minimum requirements to be an MPIO is to have a current police check (the club will pay for this) and to satisfactorily complete an online training course conducted by the Australian Sports Commission.
Please contact myself, Dale Collins or Damian Graf if you are interested in nominating as an MPIO.

The Great Flood of February
We had substantial rain and wind one night in February that caused significant damage to the courts. The club would like to thank Damian Graf, Keith Riddle and Frank Fox for their volunteer efforts in restoring the courts to a playable state. Great effort, gents.

Club Championships – Register now
This year’s Men’s and Ladies Open Singles Championships for Highmoor and also Men’s and Ladies Doubles plus the Junior Championships are open for registration.
Please note that due to member feedback, we have made a change to the way matches are scheduled this year. Instead of opponents organising their own matches at a mutually arranged time and place; each round of the championships will now be held at the club at a set date and time (these will be advised once the draws are completed following registration). We hope that this innovation will reduce the issues we have had in the past with matches not being organised by the set deadlines and overall make participating in the Championships even easier (and hopefully more interesting) having all matches in a round being played at the club together.
Registration is open now and closes on 6th May. A list has been posted on the noticeboard at the club house for each of the singles and doubles events upon which you can register. Following registration closing, the draw for each event will be made by the Selection Committee and posted on the club noticeboard – and emailed to each player. We would love to see as many of you as possible participate in this year’s events.
As has been the case in the past, our coach, Damian Graf, will be arranging this year’s Junior Club Championships (for members 18 years and younger). If you would like to participate in these events, please contact Damian on email at – email@example.com or by phone on 0412 295 658.
If you are a junior with a well-developed game please also feel free to put your name down for the Open Club Championships as well!
If you have any queries regarding the Club Championships, please do not hesitate to contact Glenn Collins, Senior Teams Officer on 0408 494 031
If you are a bit of a cheat and like to bend the rules Smith and Warner style, then you can find the rules below which discuss balls. Beware you will be caught and banned.
